With recent changes at Warner Bros, the future of DC films is uncertain, a Superman reboot from acclaimed Ta-Nehisi Coates and executive producer J.J was one of the most unexpected projects announced a few years ago.
Abrams Although we haven’t received many updates about the project in the past year, it doesn’t seem to be extinct. The Hollywood Reporter‘s latest report delves into the specifics of DC movie studio Warner Bros’ future film plans. The studio is greenlighting Michael De Luca, Pamela Abdy, and Henry Cavill’s sequel to Man of Steel.
Abrams’ production of Coates’ film is still on schedule, and it will exist separately from the main DC movie universe.
This latest news follows a report from April of this year that Coates would be “turning in a draft of his screenplay… soon.” A June report then indicated that the studio “has yet to finalize plans” for the project.
What would a Superman movie directed by J.J. Abrams and written by Ta-Nehisi Coates be about?
There have been rumors that Coates’ film will center around a Black Superman, and that it could potentially be set in the 20th century. This would seemingly be in line with Superman’s original comic debut in 1938. Michael B. Jordan has also announced plans to play a Black Superman in an HBO Max series, and there are rumors indicating he could be playing Val-Zod.
“To be invited into the DC Extended Universe by Warner Bros., DC Films and Bad Robot is an honor,” Coates told Shadow and Act. “I look forward to meaningfully adding to the legacy of America’s most iconic mythic hero.”
“We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with the brilliant Mr. Coates to help bring that story to the big screen, and we’re beyond thankful to the team at Warner Bros. for the opportunity.” Abrams said. “There is a new, powerful and moving Superman story yet to be told,”
“Ta-Nehisi Coates’s novel, Between the World and Me, revealed a new perspective for many of us,” said Toby Emmerich, former Chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group. “We’re confident that his take on Superman will give fans a new and exciting way to see the Man of Steel.”
