He is now weighing in on the recent firing of Guardians of The Galaxy director James Gunn by Disney. Gunn was fired over a series of tweets that included jokes and comments about controversial topics. In Jerry Seinfeld’s opinion, Gunn shouldn’t have to be punished for his tweets if they were jokes.
He does admit that he hasn’t read any of the tweets that went out a decade ago and eventually cost Gunn his career, but he does stand by his beliefs that jokes are exempt. The New York Times posted an interview Wednesday in which the topic came up about July’s Marvel shakeup.

“I didn’t read the jokes, but if they’re jokes, it doesn’t matter. I guess Roseanne Barr thought she was being funny, but it wasn’t funny — and if it’s offensive and not funny, then it’s not a joke. But any comedian that doesn’t understand that dynamic, you’re finished anyway.”

He goes on to say that jokes aren’t representative of reality.

“Jokes are not real. People assume that when you say something that you believe it. It’s purely comedic invention. You know, I do this whole bit about Pop-Tarts and how much I love them. I don’t love Pop-Tarts. It’s just funny. It’s funny to say it, so I say it.”

The cast of Guardians of The Galaxy has been vocally dissatisfied with the situation, and they released a joint statement a week after the firing occurred in July.

Although fans have also expressed their opinion about the situation and some have even petitioned to get James Gunn rehired, Disney is standing its ground.
