The next chapter of The Bourne Identity universe is slowly coming together. According to Deadline, USA Network has cast Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again’s Jeremy Irvine and Sense8’s Brian J. Smith as the two leads for their upcoming series Treadstone, which is being dubbed as a Bourne spinoff following the fictional CIA black ops organization from the films.
The series itself “centers on the fictional CIA black ops program Operation Treadstone, which was the program that created superspy, Jason Bourne. The covert program uses behavior modification protocol to turn recruits into nearly superhuman assassins. The first season follows sleeper agents across the globe as they’re mysteriously “awakened” to resume their deadly missions.”
Irvive will be playing “J. Randolph Bentley, a spy dispatched by the CIA to eliminate a key target, who ends up embroiled in an international conspiracy.” While Smith will play “Doug McKenna, an all-American oil-rig worker whose life changes after he discovers long-buried truths about himself.” Treadstone will be written and executive produced by Heroes helmer Tim Kring with Ramin Bahrani directing the pilot. It will be produced by Universal Cable Productions and Captivate Entertainment, which produced the feature films, will be sending Ben Smith and Jeffrey Weiner to executive produce on its behalf.

Irvine first hit the scene with a leading role in Steven Speilberg’s War Horse. While he wasn’t nominated for his performance, the movie went on to be nominated for 6 Academy Awards in 2011 including Best Picture. Since then he’s starred in an array of films such as The Railway Man, which also featured his Mamma Mia! co-stars Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgård, The Woman in Black 2, The Beautiful Fantastic and most recently Billionaire Boys Club with Ansel Elgort and Taron Egerton. Irvine has a few projects coming up as well including Paradise Hills with Emma Watson and Milla Jovovich and The Professor and the Madman with Sean Penn and Mel Gibson.
Smith starred in Netflix’s original series Sense8 as Chicago police officer Will Gorski throughout the show’s two season run. He also has had guest-starring roles on series such as Gossip Girl, The Good Wife, Person of Interest, Blue Bloods, Defiance, and Quantico. He recently appeared onstage as Chance Wayne in Tennessee Williams’ Sweet Bird of Youth with Marcia Gay Harden. He is also set to star in the upcoming TV drama World on Fire with Helen Hunt, which follows the lives of ordinary people affected by WWII.
Production on Treadstone will begin in 2019.
Having studied Media & Writing at James Madison University, I always knew that I wanted to do some type of creative writing, but being able to write about zombies, Starks, and superheroes on a daily basis for Fan Fest is my actual dream. While I probably shouldn’t be as proud as I am to be so similar to Nick Miller, I do hope to one day write my own “Pepperwood Chronicles’.
