James Gunn Teases SDCC Appearance for a Secret “Dark, Sweet, and Special” Project

We are just days away from the pop culture event of the year, San Diego Comic-Con. Every year, SDCC is jam-packed with news, announcements, trailers and more from all of the most highly-anticipated upcoming television shows and movies from some of the biggest networks and studios around.

In the days leading up to the convention, you can bet there will be several teasers dropped on social media hinting at what fans can expect to see in this year’s Hall H panels. Director James Gunn has already dropped a teaser which has fans really scratching their heads. Gunn is best known in recent years for directing Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy films, however, despite Marvel’s absence from this year’s convention, Gunn appears to still be attending and presenting during a panel.

Over the weekend, Gunn posted a picture to his social media pages showing a San Diego Comic-Con tent card with his name on it. He captioned the photo, “I will see many of you at #SanDiegoComicCon one week from today (Friday, 7/20), with something dark, sweet, and special. #sdcc #secrets” Check out Gunn’s post from Instagram below:

Fans immediately began commenting that perhaps Gunn was bringing a sneak peek at the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, however, with Marvel’s absence this year, that seems unlikely. Others have pointed to the fact that Friday’s schedule contains the Sony Pictures panel which does have ties to Marvel thanks to Venom and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, however, it’s been said that Venom is not part of the MCU and therefore seems like a bit of a stretch if Gunn was to be making a Guardians announcement. Gunn also has a background in the horror genre, so perhaps his appearance is a whole new project!

One thing’s for sure, Gunn’s wording in his post surely means something. “Dark, sweet and special.” So, what could it be? It looks like we’ll just have to wait until Friday to find out.
