James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy Gains Momentum without David Bowie’s “Starman”
Excitement is building for James Gunn‘s highly-anticipated reboot of Superman: Legacy as the casting process moves forward. David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan have been confirmed for the lead roles of Clark Kent / Superman and Lois Lane, respectively, adding to the anticipation surrounding Gunn’s fresh take on these iconic characters. Recently, Gunn took to social media to address one aspect that won’t be included in Legacy: David Bowie’s hit song “Starman.” Responding to fans who had requested the song for years, Gunn clarified that he wouldn’t use it in the film.
The storyline of Superman: Legacy, according to DC Studios, focuses on Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his upbringing as Clark Kent in Smallville, Kansas. The film explores his embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that often dismisses kindness as outdated.
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav expressed his confidence in the DC universe and highlighted the collaborative efforts of Gunn and Peter Safran, the co-CEO of DC Studios. Zaslav referred to the completed first draft of the Superman script and emphasized the company’s bullish outlook on the DC franchise for long-term growth.
The DC Studios slate, as revealed by Gunn and Safran, includes a range of movies and television shows such as The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Swamp Thing, and The Authority, alongside HBO Max series like Waller, Booster Gold, Lanterns, Paradise Lost, and an animated Creature Commandos series. Gunn and Safran expressed their enthusiasm for the opportunity to work with these beloved DC characters and their commitment to creating a multilayered universe while allowing artistic individuality.
Superman: Legacy is set to hit theaters exclusively on July 11, 2025. As fans eagerly anticipate the film, they continue to share their thoughts on the absence of David Bowie’s “Starman” in the project.
