Is Lena Luthor Destined for Badness?

Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) joined the Supergirl ranks during Season 2, but the big question was is she a force for good or evil? There were several moments during the season where Lena seemed to have turned to the dark side, like joining her mother and Cadmus in releasing an alien virus to kill all aliens. But she turned the tables on her mother, working in a fail-safe and calling the police. Her true alignment has always been in question as she struggles with the burden of her family name.

Lena has seemed to overcome all of the lies and and familial manipulation during Season 2, but we can’t help but wonder what the tipping point will be. She’s really close to falling to the dark side. The one shining spot in her life is her friendship with Kara, but that can easily come crashing down because she doesn’t yet know that Kara is Supergirl.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Executive Producer Andrew Kreisberg addresses Kara and Lena’s friendship and the darkness that’s inside of Lena despite all her efforts to be good and moral. Kreisberg says, “As people are going to realize over the course of this season, it doesn’t take much to make you bad. People don’t just turn evil. They do one small bad thing and then that leads to another, and then to another, and so any time you’re watching Lena, you’re always wondering, ‘Is this the moment when she does the one small thing?'”

Things aren’t looking so good for Lena breaking the Luthor stigma.

Supergirl returns Monday, October 9, on The CW.
