“Is It Worth Free?” — January’s Games With Gold Revealed

Well, this got announced quicker than we thought. Most likely given Christmas week, Microsoft has revealed what games we are getting for January’s Games With Gold. Xbox is starting off the year right with a Game of the Year contender and several solid titles. Let’s take a closer look!

  • Celeste (Xbox One) – January 1st-31st

A game of the year nominee I have wanted to play so badly but never had the time to do so. Celeste is a story of a girl running off to climb a mountain, but also a story that deals with depression and anxiety. A platformer that is just tricky and trying enough, each level will have you retrying to learn the key mechanic that eludes you.

Worth Free? = Most definitely yes

Metacritic score – 94

  • Lara Croft: Guardian Of Light (Xbox 360) – January 1st-15th

The very first co-op adventure in Tomb Raider history, Guardian Of Light is a re-imagining of how you play a Tomb Raider game. With a top down, Diablo-like view, take on enemies, solve puzzles, and traverse harsh environments as you try to stop the usual suspect, a sleeping entity freed from his cursed prison who now wants to enslave the world.

Is It Worth Free? = Yes

Metacritic score – 85

  • WRC 6 (Xbox One) – January 16th-February 15th

I am not really into racing games, but off-road stuff is always fun no matter what genre you enjoy. With a ton of modes and even included split-screen (A dinosaur in terms of a feature developers actually work on) you will find something for everyone. Rally to the finish as rocks rattle the underside of your car, watch out for obstacles, and leave your opponents in a cloud of dust.

Is It Worth Free? = Maybe

Metacritic score – 68

  • Far Cry 2 (Xbox 360) – January 16th-January 31st

Always thought of as the game that came before the phenomenon known as Far Cry 3, people forget Far Cry 2 laid the foundation for the franchise, even if it was a bit unforgiving (come on, catching malaria should not be a game mechanic). Far Cry 2 sports a large open world, tons of gunplay, and snapping your broken arm back into place. This game had more of a military story to it with you being sent to take out “The Jackal”, a person stirring up war in Africa. Good times

Is It Worth Free? = *trying to not catch malaria* Yes

Metacritic score – 85
