Idris Elba and Caleb McLaughlin to star in ‘Concrete Cowboys’

Idris Elba and Caleb McLaughlin are set to star in Concrete Cowboys.

The film is inspired by the novel Ghetto Cowboy by Greg Neri and the real-life Fletcher Street Stables. This black urban horsemanship community has existed in Philadelphia for more than 100 years providing a safe haven for the neighborhood. Concrete Cowboys follows 15-year-old Cole (McLaughlin) who is taken to live with his estranged father Harp (Elba) in North Philadelphia, where he discovers the city’s vibrant urban cowboy subculture, which flourishes despite the surrounding poverty, violence, and encroachment of gentrification.

Ricky Staub is directing the screenplay he wrote with Dan Walser and Tucker Tooley Entertainment is financing the project. Elba is producing the drama alongside Daniels, Tooley, Walser, Waxylu Films’ Jennifer Madelof and Jeff Waxman, and Jennifer Madeloff. Executive producers include Greg Renker, Jason Barhydt, Sam Mercer, Tegan Jones, Staci Hagenbaugh, and Neri.

The film also stars Jharrel Jerome, who is freshly Emmy nominated for Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us; Lorraine Toussaint (The Village); and Byron Bowers (The Chi). McLaughlin is know for his role as Lucas Sinclair in the Netflix series Stranger Things and Elba was last seen in Fast & Furious spinoff Hobbs & Shaw.

The film does not have an exact release date but will release in 2020.
