Both The Vampire Diaries and The Originals may be done but Ian Somerhalder is not quite ready to say goodbye to the supernatural world of vampires just yet. Back in April, it was announced that Somerhalder would headline the new Netflix drama series V-Wars, which is based on Jonathan Maberry’s IDW comic of the same name, as Dr. Luther Swann and now we’ve got our first look at him in character!
V-Wars follows Dr. Luther Swann as he focuses his efforts on trying to understand a mysterious disease that has caused many people, including his best friend Michael Fayne, to turn into bloodthirsty vampires. Meanwhile, society struggles to maintain balance when the humans and vampires begin battling against each other in a power war. Somerhalder introduced us to Dr. Swann yesterday on his Instagram with the caption “Here he is… @drlutherswannofficial aka Dr. Luther Swann. Would you trust this man?”
It’s a good question. He is rocking some fancy specs and a signature lab coat, but his bloody hand certainly raises some suspicion. Check it out below!
It should be interesting to watch Somerhalder’s take on playing a human in a supernatural drama seeing as he played bad boy vampire Damon Salvatore on The Vampire Diaries for eight seasons and nearly 180 episodes from 2009 to 2017. It was a role that series showrunners William Laurin and Glenn Davis took into account when casting the leading man.
[row]”We could not have dreamed of a better choice than Ian Somerhalder to bring his keen understanding of this genre from his years of starring in The Vampire Diaries to lead the cast of V-Wars as Dr. Luther Swann and to be a creative force on this series, as well as to serve as a director this season. We are thrilled to partner with Netflix to bring the multifaceted world that Jonathan Maberry created to audiences worldwide.”[/row]
Netflix seems to be the new home for IDW comics as they recently ordered Locke and Key to series, which follows three siblings who, after the gruesome murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Maine only to find the house has magical keys that give them an array of powers. That series features Lost’s Carlton Cuse serving as co-showrunner alongside The Good Wife’s Meredith Averill.
V-Wars also stars Arrow’s Adrian Holmes as Michael Fayne, Peter Outerbridge, and Jacky Lai.
What do you think of Somerhalder’s first V-Wars look? Are you excited for the new series?
Having studied Media & Writing at James Madison University, I always knew that I wanted to do some type of creative writing, but being able to write about zombies, Starks, and superheroes on a daily basis for Fan Fest is my actual dream. While I probably shouldn’t be as proud as I am to be so similar to Nick Miller, I do hope to one day write my own “Pepperwood Chronicles’.
