It’s been ten years since Mamma Mia! hit theaters and brought us into Donna and Sophie Sheridan’s enchanting world of Kalokairi Island where Abba songs and potential dads are abundant!
The story goes that after college Donna took off on a grand adventure that found her having a string of meaningful encounters with three men, one of which is Sophie’s father. When Sophie gets married she invites all three of them to her wedding with the hopes of figuring out who her real dad is. Of course, by the end, they all end up stepping into the role.
First, there was Harry, played by Colin Firth.
Then there was Bill, played by Stellan Skarsgård.
And lastly, there was Sam, played by Pierce Brosnan.
Now, nearly a decade later we’re getting the next chapter of the story, that also serves as a prequel to the first movie. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again finds Seyfried’s character, Sophie, pregnant and feeling more connected to her mother’s journey than ever before. As she attempts to open up Hotel Bella Donna in her late mother’s honor, the story flashes back to that magical summer Donna had with Sam, Bill, and Harry that led her to Kalakari. That means we were treated to younger versions of all the main characters. It was amazing.
Young Harry, Bill, and Sam really stole the show, but if you found yourself wondering just where you recognized them from, allow us to help!
The first guy Donna meets along the way is the charming young Harry, who is played by Hugh Skinner. Movie musical fans may recognize Skinner from his role in Les Miserables as Joly. Fun fact: Amanda Seyfried also starred in the movie adaption of Les Mis.
He’s somewhat of a staple on BBC One appearing as Dr. Barnaby Ford on Our Zoo and Unwin Trevaunance on Poldark. He also had a recurring guest-star role on season 1 of Harlots on Hulu.
Skinner appeared in 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi as Holdo’s First Officer and has had a starring role on The Windsors, a British sitcom re-imagining the lives of the British Royal Family. Next up, he will be appearing in The Romanoffs, a highly anticipated anthology series from Mad Men’s Matthew Weiner
Next up is the dashing sailor Bill, played by the very handsome Josh Dylan. I considered Dylan’s character to be quite the scene-stealer and actually provided a lot of heart to Donna’s story. Surprisingly, Dylan only had one acting credit prior to his role in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. He appeared alongside Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard in 2016’s Allied as Captain Adam Hunter.
He recently just wrapped a horror film titled The Little Stranger, which also stars The Affair’s Ruth Wilson, Domhnall Gleeson, and Will Poulter. The film comes out this month and you can check out the trailer below!
Last but certainly not least is young Sam aka Donna’s true soulmate, who is played by Jeremy Irvine. Irvine hit the scene with quite the bang with a leading role in Steven Speilberg’s War Horse. While he wasn’t nominated for his performance, the movie went on to be nominated for 6 Academy Awards in 2011 including Best Picture.
Since then he’s starred in an array of films such as The Railway Man, which also featured his Mamma Mia! co-stars Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgård, The Woman in Black 2, The Beautiful Fantastic and most recently Billionaire Boys Club with Ansel Elgort and Taron Egerton.
Irvine has a few projects coming up as well including Paradise Hills with Emma Watson and Milla Jovovich and The Professor and the Madman with Sean Penn and Mel Gibson.
So, there you have it! Which young guy was your favorite? Let us know! Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is currently playing in theaters!
Having studied Media & Writing at James Madison University, I always knew that I wanted to do some type of creative writing, but being able to write about zombies, Starks, and superheroes on a daily basis for Fan Fest is my actual dream. While I probably shouldn’t be as proud as I am to be so similar to Nick Miller, I do hope to one day write my own “Pepperwood Chronicles’.
