Here’s What Movies People Saw Over the Thanksgiving Weekend

Looks like many were looking for some more family fun after their Thanksgiving feasts because audiences helped Coco earn more than $72 million over the five-day holiday period. It also had earned a total of $50 million for the traditional three-day weekend time frame.

These numbers put the Land of the Dead inspired film third on the list of highest Thanksgiving openings behind Disney’s Frozen, which earned $93 million and Moana, which raked in $82 million.

Coco’s warm reception at the box office also marked a huge milestone for diversity, becoming the highest-grossing film in Mexican history prior to its domestic release. It currently holds an A+ on CinemaScore and a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, which means that it will surely be a family go to film throughout the rest of the holiday season!

Coco tells the story of an aspiring young musician named Miguel whose family has an ancestral ban on music, which leads him to the Land of the Dead to figure out why. It features the voices of Anthony Gonzalez, Gael García Bernal, Benjamin Bratt, Alanna Ubach and Jaime Camil and was written and directed by Lee Unkrich.

Coming in second place over the Thanksgiving weekend was Warner Bros Justice League, which hasn’t really gotten off to the booming start that they would have hoped. The superhero team-up brought in $59.5 million for the five-day period bringing its 10-day total to $171.5 million, which makes it the first DC Extended Universe film to earn below $200 million after a 10-day release.

Families that weren’t really interested in the animated Coco found their way to Wonder, the heartwarming story of a boy with facial differences who attends a mainstream elementary school for the first time, starring Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson, and Jacob Tremblay. The film held its own bringing in a five-day total of $32 million which is already well above its $20 million budget.

Of course, Thor: Ragnarok continued to dominate adding another $24 million to its now $790 million worldwide gross. It now holds the 7th spot on the MCU box office charts, taking the place of Guaridans of the Galaxy.
