Guillermo del Toro Announces ‘Trollhunters’ Voice Casting

Be sure to check under your bridges for any lurkers, because the Trollhunters are coming your way! The announcement was officially made June 15 at France’s Annecy Festival.

During the event, Guillermo del Toro announced that Anton Yelchin (Star Trek), Kelsey Grammer (Fraiser, Boss), and Ron Perlman (Sons of Anarchy, Hand of God) have signed on to be the voices in the upcoming Netflix series, Trollhunters.

Trollhunters is “set in the fictional suburb of Arcadia,” where Jim, and his two best friends “make a startling discovery that beneath their hometown lies a hidden battle between good trolls and bad, the outcome of which will impact their lives forever,” DreamWorks Animation and Netflix said in a statement on Wednesday.

Yelchin will play Jim, the lead character and “an ordinary teenage boy whose discovery of a mystical amulet sets his life on a course filled with high-stakes adventure.” Grammer will provide the voice of a friendly troll Blinky, while frequent del Toro collaborator Perlman will portray Bular, which the series makers describe as “a sinister troll who targets Jim and his friends for battle.”

Trollhunters was originally developed by del Toro as animated movie for DreamWorks which, unfortunately, did not wind up coming together. However, del Toro took his work on that film and turned it into a Trollhunters book which he co-wrote with Daniel Kraus and published last year. So far, we haven’t seen any footage of the Trollhunters series, but we can’t wait to see del Toro’s signature creations finally come to animation later this year.

DreamWorks and Netflix, for their part, promise “stunning visuals and ambitious, complex storytelling” which “raises the bar for family series as a global must-see viewing event for the entire family.”

Marc Guggenheim (Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow) is executive producing the Trollhunters series alongside del Toro, and Christina Steinberg (Rise of the Guardians, National Treasure) as well as Dan and Kevin Hageman (The LEGO Movie).

Trollhunters is set to debut on Netflix December 2016.
