‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ Begins Filming & Teases More Monsters!

A few years ago we got the Reboot of Reboots, Godzilla (2014). Gareth Edward’s masterpiece was so good that critics forget all about the 90s/00s ‘Zilla’ film and realized that maybe Western studios could do the mighty King of Monsters justice. And the sequel Godzilla: King of the Monsters has just begun filming in Atlanta. Now there’s still much to be done as the film is scheduled to come out in early 2019; but there’s still a lot to be excited about and we already know some big things to expect from the sequel.

For starters, we don’t know much about the human element of this film, but we do know Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring), Kyle Chandler (The Wolf of Wall Street), Charles Dance (Game Of Thrones) and Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) have all been added to the cast. As for returning cast, only Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins will reprise their original roles, which means the Monarch Corporation will return! Now this makes a lot of sense seeing as Monarch isn’t just the Corporation that studies these ancient creates but also because Monarch is what ties together Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island. Though don’t expect Kong to appear in this film, you’ll have to wait a little bit longer for Godzilla Vs Kong is 2020.

As for the plot, we already have a plot synopsis and it’s everything we’ve wanted from a new Godzilla series and more.

The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah.  When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

Now if there’s any monsters besides Godzilla fans definitely know it’s Mothra, Rodan and the evil three-headed dragon named King Ghidorah. Having these three massive monsters in the same film is tremendous though what I’m most excited for is seeing how they explain them. What the team did in the first film to explain Godzilla and the other monsters (aka Mutos) as a primitive super species that fed on radiation was genius. So seeing how they can explain a massive Pterodactyl and 3 headed dragon will be very exciting. Though if you took around for the Kong: Skull Island Post Credits, you already know the idea of Godzilla and Ghidorah being mortal enemies has been introduced. As for Mothra, we’ve already had giant insects so he/she/it’s fine.

In the context of the film, Godzilla used to be the apex predator, but with Ghidorah here is looks like Godzilla might not have been the only apex of his time. Though despite the summary saying Godzilla will fight all 3, I’m doubtful this will happen all at the same time. In the original films, Mothra and Rodan became sort of companion Monsters of Godzilla. So whereas he might start the film fighting them, by films end I’m sure they’ll all team up to take on Ghidorah. And what happens when they defeat Ghidorah? Well (again) in the original series King Ghidorah was eventually rebuilt as Mecha-King Ghidorah. Could Monarch take the body of Ghidorah at the films end and rebuilt him so they have a weapon to fight against these super creatures? Perhaps we’ll see Kong and Godzilla team up against this monstrosity in Godzilla vs Kong. Though I’m probably getting ahead of myself.

There’s a lot of filming left to go and Godzilla hasn’t shown up on set yet – thank God – so stay tuned here for more. But in the meantime, what would you like to see happen in this film? Do you think Michael Dougherty will do as good a job as Gareth Edwards did (or at least keep the momentum going)? Sound off in the comments!
