Ginnifer Goodwin talks Once Upon A Time’s ‘Bittersweet Goodbye’ between Snow and Charming

Fans of Once Upon A Time were recently shocked to learn that many key cast members wouldn’t be returning for the series in its 7th season. Earlier this week, Executive Producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis sat down with Entertainment Weekly to discuss the characters leaving, the new ones coming forward, and how the world they’re living in isn’t changing fundamentally, it’s just time to bring some new to the story.

Their quotes are as follows.

Adam: Just on a conceptional level, it’s the same show. We’re trying to tell the same kind of stories and honor the DNA of what Once Upon a Time was from the very start. But I think we — Eddy and I — felt that as we approached season 6, the time had come to close the chapter on a lot of the stories we had been telling, which was the impetus behind this season finale, and open some new chapters. While there are some characters returning and some not returning, it’s still the same universe, and it’s still the same kind of storytelling. It’s just that we’re going to be coming at it from a little bit of a different angle. It’s not going to be necessarily Storybrooke-based.
Edward: Also, what we see is, a new hero is leading us into a new world, which is an adult Henry Mills. We saw that in what we realize are flash forwards, and then at the very end, Henry has grown up and he looks like he left home. He was an Author writing everyone else’s story, so to me, it looks like he left home to find his own story and then something happened, and now he’s got to be the hero.

It’s going to be incredible to see what happens next, and even those cast members who are signing off (for now, at least) are excited about what’s to come. Ginnifer Goodwin spoke on her decision to leave OUAT and the conversation she had with Josh about departing the series.

EW: What came with the decision to leave Once Upon a Time?
What came with the bittersweet decision to give these characters a happy ending — and the timing couldn’t have been more perfect for that — is room for a new story to grow and flourish as Snow and Charming’s did.

What was that conversation like with Josh when you guys were deciding this would be your final season?
‘Hey, let’s call Eddy and Adam to talk about where our very special arc is headed.‘ – Ginny
‘What a wonderful notion, Ginny. You have EXTRAORDINARY ideas! And have I told you lately that you’re ALWAYS right?’ – Josh

How do you feel about how the story ends for Snow and Charming?
Selfishly, I’m pleased as punch. They got exactly what they wanted: dramatic, epic love balanced with normalcy (Snow’s word) and the space to indulge in both. Actually, it’s not an “end.” The final chapter of this storyline is a continuation… which is kind of Snow’s own point in the finale.

Would you return in the future — either next season or for whatever ends up being the series finale?
In keeping with the aforementioned continuation-as-happy-ending, OF COURSE I (and we) will be back. It’s merely time for ONCE to focus on something new because ONCE does “new” extremely well.

OUAT does do ‘new’ very well and it’s something we’re excited to see. We have to admit, we were a bit shaken at the prospect of something completely different for season 7, but after these interviews, we’re covinced that it’ll be greater than we imagined.
