George Lucas Museum Gets L.A. City Council Approval

Get psyched George Lucas fans!  Pretty soon, there will be an entire museum dedicated to Lucas’ works pertaining to the history of narrative art, digital art and the art of cinema and the early concept art for the location looks pretty amazing.

On Tuesday, Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved plans for the construction of a $1.5 billion museum dedicated to the legendary filmmaker.  The LA location was chosen after also scouting other locations such as San Francisco and Chicago but, neither location worked out.  Groundbreaking on the construction is expected to take place later on this year at Exposition Park near the University of Southern California which, perhaps not so coincidentally happens to be Lucas’ alma mater.

The museum will be 5-stories and was designed by Ma Yansong.  The massive building will span seven acres of land which will be filled with collections from David Hockney and Norman Rockwell in addition to containing one-of-a-kind featured items including memorabilia from Star Wars.

The construction of the museum is expected to take a rather lengthy three years to complete but, at the end of the day will also be resulting in thousands of construction jobs during the building.  Once completed, the museum is expected to house an estimated 1,000 permanent jobs needed in order to run the facility.

L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti and local elected official of the council are thrilled with the new construction coming to the city.  Garcetti said in a statement:

“The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art will add another world-class institution to our city’s cultural landscape, and bring a breathtaking architectural jewel to Exposition Park.  I am proud to have worked with George Lucas and Mellody Hobson to bring this incredible gift to Los Angeles — and I applaud the City Council for voting to approve a gem for South L.A. that will touch the lives of Angelenos and visitors for generations to come.”
