Garth Brooks, the renowned country icon, has had a successful career spanning several decades, but it hasn’t been without its fair share of controversies. Recently, Brooks faced backlash for his involvement in the Bud Light partnership with transgender activist and TikTok star Dylan Mulvaney.
As Brooks gears up to open his bar in Nashville, named The Friends In Low Places Bar & Honky Tonk, he shared his plans in an interview with Billboard. He expressed his intention to create a safe and friendly environment where people respect one another. In line with this vision, Brooks mentioned that the bar will serve every brand of beer, emphasizing that it’s not their decision to make but rather a way to cater to the preferences of their customers.
While some fans supported Brooks’ inclusive stance, others voiced their disapproval of his comments and the decision to sell Bud Light. One individual took to Twitter to urge people not to visit the bar, claiming that Brooks believed they were “a—holes” if they didn’t like Bud Light. Another fan expressed disappointment and threw away their collection of Brooks’ music.
This isn’t the first time Brooks has courted controversy throughout his career. In 1991, his song “The Thunder Rolls” and its accompanying music video caused a stir. The video depicted themes of cheating, abuse, and revenge, which led to it being banned by The Nashville Network (TNN) and CMT. Despite the controversy, Brooks won the CMA video of the year award that same year.
In 1992, Brooks released “We Shall Be Free,” a song envisioning a world free from various societal issues. When NBC initially refused to air the accompanying music video due to its intense imagery, Brooks left the stadium before his scheduled Super Bowl performance. NBC eventually agreed to air the video, and Brooks performed the national anthem as planned, accompanied by Marlee Matlin performing in American Sign Language.
These controversies throughout Brooks’ career highlight the polarizing nature of some of his choices and statements. Despite the criticism, Brooks remains a prominent figure in the country music scene, continuing to engage and connect with his audience through his music and endeavors.
