Game of Thrones might well be over, and depending on who you are that’s either a good thing or a bad thing… but anyway! the new prequel series, currently under the working title Blood Moon, has begun filming.
This new series will take place before the events of Game of Thrones, and according to George R.R. Martin, it will actually take place roughly 5,000 years before the war for the Iron Throne ignited. HBO have released a short synopsis for this prequel that reads:
‘Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend, only one thing is for sure: It’s not the story we think we know.’
The prequel series has now officially started production, and according to Entertainment Weekly, the show is returning to a very familiar setting.
Northern Ireland.
Since this show is looking to be a sort of origin story of the Night King and the Long Night, it makes sense that Northern Island is their favourite place to film since a majority of Winterfell and other northern regions of Westeros were filmed in Ireland. What is unclear is whether the show will visit other parts of Westeros.
The prequel is from show runner Jane Goldman (X-Men: First Class) along with author George R.R. Martin, who is overseeing the project as well as many more, and director S.J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones).
So far, the show is being led by Naomi Watts, Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Miranda Richardson, Josh Whitehouse, Jamie Campbell Bower, Sheila Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah, Alex Sharp and Toby Regbo. Currently, all of their roles are an absolute mystery- it may be possible that one of these actors could be playing the original Prince that was Promised, also known as Azor Ahai.
