Disney made a huge announcement on Tuesday regarding the Star Wars franchise. Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have been named writers and producers on a new series of Star Wars films. It’s been announced that the new series will be separate from the original “Skywalker Saga” films and the new films in development by Rian Johnson.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement on Tuesday:
“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today. Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”
Benioff and Weiss are in the midst of wrapping up the Game of Thrones series with HBO. The final season will air sometime in 2019. Additionally, it was recently announced they would be helming a new HBO series Confederate but, after backlash and controversy surrounding the show’s premise, it appears that production has halted.
Benioff and Weiss expressed their excitement and their love for all things Star Wars in a joint statement by saying:
“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since. We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”
