My year of Gaming: Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series
At the beginning of 2017, I purchased a Playstation 4, and it was the first time I have had a console since 2011. Needless to say, I have quite the backlog of games. I played through 23 titles in my first year getting hardcore back into gaming, and still have a long way to go. Now that we’re halfway through 2018, I figured I would share what I have been playing since the beginning of the year.
I picked up Game of Thrones (2014) for $7 during a crazy PSN sale. I had never played a Telltale game before, but knew that it was a sort of “choose your own adventure” type thing. The game throws you right into the mix of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire. You literally start during the events of the Red Wedding. You assume command of a couple of different characters who all hail from House Forrester, a small House known for their Ironwood. During the course of the six chapter series, the choices you make determine who lives and who dies.
I thought it was really interesting playing through this game because the main story happens alongside events of the series, such as the Red Wedding, the Purple Wedding, and the capture of Mareen. You have interactions with some major Game of Thrones characters including Jon Snow, Cersei and Tyrion Lannister, Maergery Tyrell, Ramsey Snow, and Danaerys (who are all voiced by their respective actors, which I thought was neat). Going into the game, I thought the whole thing would be choosing your answer to questions/situations posed by the characters to progress the story, and didn’t really expect there to be any quick thinking commands. There were, and I’m real bad at acting under pressure, but these moments did help the pacing.
I played through the game trying to be neutral and please everyone with my responses. Of course, this is Game of Thrones, so nobody is happy and every decision is a bad one. There were several times when I thought I was making a good choice by being honest, but then ended up displeasing the person I was talking to (having Maergery tell me she was disappointed in me was the worst). If Telltale ever releases a second season, I will try a bit harder to play the “game of thrones.”
Overall, the game is a great companion to the HBO series. It was fun to see how everything played out and I’m curious to know how the series is going to end. Maybe Telltale will release more once the TV show ends in 2019.
