ABC’s The Good Doctor is already giving fans a lot to look forward to in the upcoming second season.

Earlier this month, it was announced that four fan favorites guest stars would be promoted to series regulars in the second season. Newcomers Will Yun Lee, who plays the former cop turned doctor Alex Park, and Fiona Gubelmann, who plays the cut-throat resident, Dr. Morgan Reznick, were both bumped to regulars for season 2. Additionally, season one vet Christina Chang who plays Dr. Neil Melendez’s (Nicholas Gonzalez) counterpart Dr. Audrey Lim has also received a promotion to series regular as did the lovable Paige Spara, who plays Lea, Dr. Shaun Murphy’s (Freddie Highmore) love interest.

This past weekend, during Deadline‘s The Contenders Emmys event, series star Freddie Highmore was on hand to tease some details for season 2. Highmore, who is also listed as an executive producer on the series, will be taking a more active role behind the scenes in the sophomore season. Deadline confirmed that in addition to sitting in the director’s chair for one episode in the upcoming season, Highmore will also be heading into the writers’ room to work on another episode.

This wouldn’t be the first time that Highmore has stepped behind the scenes of a series. Previously, in addition to starring as Norman Bates, he served as a writer on two episodes and director for another on Bates Motel.

Deadline also reports that, while season two will continue to explore Dr. Shaun Murphy’s challenges at the hospital, it will also focus on his relationship with Lea though, according to Highmore himself, Shaun’s relationship with Dr. Aaron Glassman (played by Richard Schiff) is really the heart of the season two story.

What do you think about Freddie Highmore stepping behind the cameras on The Good Doctor?  Are you excited to see what season two has in store for Dr. Shaun Murphy?  Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below.
