First Look: ‘Bane: Conquest 1’

Legendary comic book writer Chuck Dixon, best known for writing acclaimed runs of Batman, Robin and Birds of Prey, will be returning to the DC Comic-verse after almost a decade. Dixon’s written an astounding 472 comics starring Batman, his friends and foes – and co-creating a character that has become one of the Dark Knight’s most deadly and popular foes: Bane.

Dixon will be partnering up with artist Graham Nolan to produce an epic 12-issue series, titled Bane: Conquest.

Dixon and Nolan had previously tackled a number of Bane-centric stories in the ’90s, including Knightfall, Vengeance of Bane & Vengeance of Bane II: The Redemption and Batman: Bane of the Demon.

Bane: Conquest is described as “a twelve-issue series that will push him to the limit! (I mean one would think with all that venom he would already be pushed to his limit, right?)

Bane is seeking to create a global criminal empire with the help of his original gang, Bird, Trogg, and Zombie. The Man Who Broke The Bat moves beyond Gotham to find new cities to conquer and new enemies to crush. He won’t stop until he stands at the top of the world of crime! For Bane, it’s all about CONQUEST.

“Graham and I have always wanted to do a lengthy, standalone crime epic with Bane as the central figure,” Dixon said. “I mean, we helped raise him to the place he holds in the DCU. So we wanted to do a story that cements him there and makes him a serious global threat to the order represented by DC’s heroes. This is that story!”

So why would Dixon come back for this tale – and not another epic Batman story such as Knightfall? Many of you would probably remember a very particular scene from Knightfall; in which Bane broke Batman’s back.

“Well, I’ve done a lot of epic Batman stories and might do so again,” Dixon said. “But Bane needed this kind of story told about him – and the association of Graham and I back on the character does about 90% of the marketing department’s work for them!”

Bane: Conquest #1, written by Chuck Dixon with art and cover by Graham Nolan and colors by Gregory Wright, hits shelves May 3rd.
