This weekend marks the highly anticipated return of the Extraction franchise on Netflix with its second thrilling installment. Directed by Sam Hargrave, Extraction 2 is not only expected to be a major success for the streaming platform, but it’s also receiving significantly better reviews compared to its predecessor. Critics have already had the opportunity to screen Extraction 2, and some lucky movie fans in Los Angeles have even watched it on the big screen. The consensus among both groups is that the sequel surpasses the original in quality.

As of Thursday afternoon, Extraction 2 boasts higher critic and audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes than the first film. The initial Extraction, released in 2020, received a 67% critic score and a 70% audience score. With nearly 50 reviews so far, Extraction 2 has garnered an impressive 81% from critics, while the audience score currently stands at 84%.

Within movies like Extraction 2, there are numerous challenging scenes, and the franchise has always prided itself on executing difficult stunts. While Chris Hemsworth is no stranger to these types of challenges, there is one stunt in the film that made the actor a bit apprehensive.

“There’s always a risk in those scenes. The one that scared me the most was being on top of a moving train going 40 miles an hour, with a helicopter flying backward just 20 feet in front of me, while Sam was in the middle filming the entire thing,” Hemsworth shared with AP. “Experiences like that are abundant, but I believe it gives the audience authenticity and truth to the adrenaline, as opposed to shooting on a green screen where everything is fabricated and built in post-production. This is real, you know? We’re sweating, anxious, nervous, intimidated, and that’s what gets captured.”

Extraction 2 sees Hemsworth reprising his role as Tyler Rake, and he reunites with director Sam Hargrave from the first film. Hargrave, previously a stunt coordinator and second unit director for Marvel Studios, brings his expertise to the franchise. Joe and Anthony Russo, known for directing Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Endgame, serve as producers for the Extraction films on Netflix. Joe Russo wrote the screenplay for both movies.

Here’s the official synopsis for Netflix’s Extraction 2:

“Chris Hemsworth returns as Tyler Rake in EXTRACTION 2, the sequel to Netflix’s blockbuster action film EXTRACTION. After surviving the harrowing events of the first movie, Rake, an Australian black ops mercenary, is back on another perilous mission: rescuing the battered family of a ruthless Georgian gangster from the prison where they are being held.”
