Ewan McGregor Responds to 'Beauty and the Beast' Controversy

Everyone has been raving about how magical the live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast is until one theater in Alabama decided to try and rain on the film’s parade. Henagar Drive-In Theater said they would not be showing the film due to the announcement of LeFou (played by Josh Gad) being Disney’s “first exclusive gay character.” Obviously, that decision caused major controversy among the public and prompted Ewan McGregor, to dish out some choice words to the haters.

While on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last night, McGregor – who plays Lumiere – gave a short but effective reply when asked about it: “It’s just like, he’s a gay character. It’s 2017 for f—‘s sake.” The actor then joked, “I think if you live anywhere near Alabama, you should not go see this film. What would Jesus think?”

Emma Watson also commented on the issue, saying: “It’s always like, does [LeFou] idolize Gaston? Is he in love with Gaston? What’s the relationship there? And I think it’s incredibly subtle, to be perfectly honest.”

Beauty and the Beast opens in theaters this Friday.
