Emma Watson (the Harry Potter series, Beauty and the Beast) and Thandie Newton (Westworld) were among the guests at the SVA Theatre in New York City for the world premiere of City of Joy on Friday night. Other attendees included Eve Ensler (The Vagina Monologues) and Maggie Q (Nikita).
City of Joy is a documentary film that tells the harrowing story of the women of Congo and the devastating abuse that they endure on an unimaginable basis by Congolese men. Congolese doctor, Dr. Denis Mukwege and Congolese human rights activist, Christine Schuler Deschryver teamed up with Eve Ensler to create the City of Joy – a safe haven where these women can come together to heal and thrive amongst a sense of community and family.
After the screening of the film, Thandie Newton moderated a panel that included Ensler, Mukwege, Deschryver and Jane, a survivor who became staff at the City of Joy to help others who have faced similar devastation.
