Obviously with the news of Arrow finishing with a 10 episode run for Season 8, we all knew that the cast would be saying goodbye to their roles.
However, I don’t think we expected Emily, who has been a cast member since episode 3 of season 1, to announce her retirement before the show actually finishes. This means that season 8, the very last season of Arrow, will not feature Felicity Smoak.
Emily announced her departure on Instagram today with a nice poem dedicated to her time on Arrow and to her cast mates.
Stephen Amell also shared this on Twitter after the news.

When it was first announced that Arrow would end, Emily wrote this on her Instagram:
“I’ve been trying to find the words to simply say what the last seven years have meant to me, and I believe this photo sums it up! It’s a cuddle puddle. Everyone here is exhausted and smiling. Everyone here looks at home. The incredible mind of my friend @schwartzapproved will be taking Arrow into its 8th & final season sending it off with pride, power and love. Without this show I would have not met the inspiring people pictured here nor those I have gotten to work with and get to work with everyday. People who have become my family. I’m excited to see what is in store for the story we have been telling. I’m excited and nervous. A combination of emotions Felicity Smoak vibrates at frequently. Needless to say without the last seven years I wouldn’t have met her… Thank you to all of you for your massive support, passion and accompanying us on this journey. It’s because of you we found each other.”
So what does this mean for Felicity? Well I think it’s safe to say that Felicity won’t die. Instead, I think she will just move out of the city. What causes her to move? no idea. When you consider that her motives tend to involve sticking with Oliver through thick and thin, to actually agree to moving away means that Team Arrow must be in some serious trouble by the end of season 7.
Despite Arrow coming to an end, I think many people, including myself, are surprised by Emily’s early departure. I’ll end on a positive and just say thank you to Emily for some wonderful memories and for being part of an absolutely fantastic crew that helped build, what I believe to be, one of the nicest fandoms I’ve had the privilege of being a part of.
I would love to know some of your favourite Felicity moments! Please share them in the comment section below as we wave goodbye to the worlds best hacker.
