Elon Musk Encourages McDonald’s to Accept Dogecoin

On Tuesday, Elon Musk appeared to encourage McDonald’s to accept dogecoin, suggesting he’d eat a Happy Meal on television if the company did so.

Billy Markus, the creator of dogecoin, replied to a McDonald’s tweet with a photo showing fries last week by stating: “i want a fry.” McDonald’s then responded to Markus’ tweet with a photo of a shiba inu, the dogecoin mascot.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, tweeted on Tuesday: “I will eat a happy meal on tv if @McDonalds accepts Dogecoin.”

Mcdonald’s has yet to respond to Musk’s tweet or answer the request for comment from Insider on the issue.

After Markus tweeted last week, another person quoted McDonald’s:”If you guys accepted Dogecoin payments I would go more often.” McDonald’s replied: “We appreciate hearing your interest and continuously evaluate the payments experience.”

Elon Musk is a long-standing supporter of dogecoin, and his tweets about it frequently drive the price up. Dogecoin rose by more than 2,000% in under three days after the fast-food restaurant serviced its customers through social media. Dogecoin was trading at around $0.135 on Tuesday before Luellen made his McDonald’s post. He tweeted about it, and the currency rose to around $0.14 within seconds, a rise of almost 4%.

Last month, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that the firm would accept dogecoin for certain goods, such as its Cyberquad for Kids and Cyberwhistle.

In addition to accepting dogecoin for payment for some goods, Tesla last year purchased $1.5 billion in bitcoin. Tesla CEO Elon Musk initially stated that the firm would also accept bitcoin as payment, but the company subsequently ended the plan after Mr. Musk expressed worries over high fossil-fuel consumption for bitcoin mining.
