Ellie Darcey-Alden Didn’t Know She’d Been Cast as Lily When She Meet Daniel Radcliffe

During the “Acting as a Young Wizard” panel at LeakyCon 2018 in Dallas, Ellie Darcey-Alden, who played young Lily Potter in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, told the story of her audition and a surprise meeting with Daniel Radcliffe.

Darcey-Alden explained that she originally auditioned in 2008/2009 before the decision was made to split Deathly Hallows into two movies. She had to re-audition over a year later, and luckily still met the height and role requirements. A massive fan of the books, having started reading them at age 6, Darcey-Alden freaked out when her mother told her that she had booked the job. But before that, Darcey-Alden had a run-in with her future on-screen son, Radcliffe, and had no idea that she had been cast. Radcliffe, however, knew.

When Darcey-Alden was leaving the office following a screen test, the AD called her and her mother back in, saying there was someone they wanted her to meet. When they walked back inside, Radcliffe was there.

“Inside, I’m freaking out. And on the outside I’m like, ‘Oh, hi. I’m Ellie.’ Like totally cool. And then he goes, ‘Oh, I guess I’ll call you ‘Mum.’’ I didn’t know that I had the part, and ditzy Ellie didn’t clock it, either…. And then Mum turns around and says, ‘Oh, you can call me ‘Grandma.’’ I’m like, ‘Really? Right now? Really?’ If I’d been a little more with it, maybe I would’ve known.”
