‘DuckTales’ Un-Plucked – S2, Ep02: “The Depths of Cousin Fethry!”

It’s been a while since Ducktales had a purely ‘for fun’ episode, but even in what some would call a ‘filler episode’, we find a very valuable lesson. And who knows, perhaps this episode will lead somewhere as the season progresses. There’s Nothing Wrong with Being Weird – Huey, Feathry & Mitsy:

This isn’t our first filler episode of Ducktails, but it does have one of the best lessons yet. We’ve seen themes such as family, using your talents, etc. ; but this time around, the focus isn’t about what you can do to fit in and make it work; but rather how you stand out! The episode quickly sets up Feathry as a mirror for Huey. It begins when Feathry says “I like your hat” – as both he and Huey wear red hats – and continues onward by presenting other parallels such as licking the console and quoting the Junior Woodchuck guidebook.

Though as the episode progresses, we’re given multiple set ups that hint to Feathry having completely lost it – and thus it looks like he might serve as a foil for what Huey shouldn’t be – ; but each of these turn out to be redherrings to toy with our expectations. The ‘recluse that lost touch with the outside world’ is a staple in media, and that is why these set ups catch us each time; but Feathry isn’t an example of what not to be. In the end, he’s a kind-hearted soul who has a profound love of even the simplest of things. Donald and Scrooge don’t like dealing with him because they feel he always gets them involved in something with no pay off, which is precisely how Huey and Dewey begin this episode  with the tree bark.

It’s not hard to figure out – because it’s said and shown in multiple ways throughout the episode – but this episode’s theme is all about how being different isn’t a bad thing. In fact, it might just save you! Whether your Huey, Feathry or a giant plankton named Mitsy. What makes you different makes you valuable and there’s no shame in using your uniqueness to help and connect with those around you!

Things That “Quacked” Us Up – Easter Eggs, Quotes & More:

• “Oceanica, is that you… my love?” SERIOUSLY, when are we getting a Launchpad backstory? Baby Pandas strapped to him and now a siren love! I NEED MORE OF THIS! Or perhaps the beauty of these scenes is that they have no context and come completely out of left field.
• I loved how this episode constantly played with the recluse motif. There’s multiple set ups for Feathry to have lost it, be a psychopath, etc; but he ends up just being a really stand-up guy.
• That fish was actually a real fish – and one you’ve probably seen before shared on Social Media. It’s called a Blobfish.
• What happens 20,000 leagues under the sea, STAYS 20,000 leagues under the sea – especially if it involves kissing a worm.
• This might be a filler episode now, but as we’ve seen in the past, seemingly disconnected episodes can hold importance. Perhaps Feathry and Mitsy will return later this season to help the McDuck clan!
