In 2019, fans of Disney will be lined up (or sat at their computers ready and waiting) for Disney’s new streaming service to debut. Just months ago, news broke that Disney would be pulling its content from Netflix by 2019. The streaming service, which currently has over 100 million subscribers, will lose Disney content like Pixar and Marvel.
With all the MCU has up it’s sleeve, having exclusivity with the upcoming films like Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, and the Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: 4 films – just to name a few – will certainly allow Disney to come out strong. So strong, that it’s said to be worth $25 billion.
However, it doesn’t stop there. Pixar films are timeless, as are core Disney films and shorts, and we can’t forget Star Wars. So it’s anticipated that Disney’s streaming service will hit the number of subscribers it needs to break even, and more, within 10 years.
Benjamin Swinburne, an analyst at Morgan Stanley had this to say about Disney’s decision.
“Disney’s brands and content depth and breadth give it a unique opportunity among existing content producers to build a large global customer base in a direct to consumer streaming model.’
However, some argue that with so many already subscribed to streaming services, fans may not want to pay another $9 a month. We have to say that if it means we get to watch Captain America: The Winter Soldier as often as we’d like, we’ll pay that price with a smile.
