Last month, we gave you the low-down on a bunch of rumored upcoming Disney projects. Today, it was officially announced that the sequel to the beloved Mary Poppins film is, in fact, happening!
The sequel will star Emily Blunt (Into The Woods) as the title character, Mary Poppins and Lin-Manuel Miranda (star and creator of the Broadway hit, Hamilton) as a brand new character named Jack, a street lamplighter.
The story will take place in Depression-era London and will follow a fully-grown Jane and Michael Banks. Jane and Michael, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by Mary Poppins after a great personal loss. Through her unique and magical ways and, with the help of Jack, she helps the family find joy once again.
The film will be directed by Rob Marshall (Into The Woods), with the screenplay written by David Magee (Life of Pi). The film will be based on The Mary Poppins Stories by P.L. Travers. The film will have a brand new score to go along with the new storyline.
According to OhMyDisney.com, director Rob Marshall said, “I am truly humbled and honored to be asked by Disney to bring P.L. Travers’ further adventures to the screen. The iconic original film means so much to me personally, and I look forward to creating an original movie musical that can bring Mary Poppins, and her message that childlike wonder can be found in even the most challenging of times, to a whole new generation.”
Disney’s Mary Poppins sequel is scheduled for release on December 25, 2018. We think this is just supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
