Wreck-It-Ralph captured the hearts of Disney fans for the first time in 2012, and now its sequel is in theaters getting even more love. Ralph Breaks the Internet is solidifying the Ralph franchise as one that pulls from classics and reinventing them, with this film bringing in all the top Disney Princess for a sequence, as well as several other one-off Disney characters such as Grumpy and Eeyore.
The film’s directors Phil Johnston and Rich Moore are feeling confident in their end to the franchise with the current film. They feel as though they’ve tied up the characters’ stories nicely and there may not be a need to continue them.
Johnston told Comicbook.com in an interview recently, “I mean, I don’t know because I feel good about where they’re at. I mean you could envision like plot things where something gets screwed up and they have to reconnect to fix it. But in terms of it being a story of maturation for Ralph? Like he’s really, like John Reilly said in the press conference. The internet represents the sort of adult phase of their life. And I think Ralph at the end, has matured where he is comfortable in his skin and he will make friends and he and Vanellope will still hang out. And Vanellope is just coming of age, she’s just finding that thing that makes her passionate, and I don’t know.”
Perhaps they will come up with an idea that works in the future, as the first film itself was originally meant to stand alone.
Moore jokes, “Like [what about] an animated Taken. Where Ralph gets taken and we have to get Liam Neeson.”
Johnston adds, “We did have this crazy idea that Ralph 3-D prints himself and comes into the real world somehow.”
What did you think of Wreck-It-Ralph: Ralph Breaks the Internet? Do you think the franchise can end here?
