Director James Gunn Confirms 2022 Release for ‘The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special’

Marvel fans have been waiting for a long time for the third installment in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, which was delayed by three years from its intended debut in 2020. The good news is that, just before Guardians Vol. 3 arrives next May, Marvel will present us with a one-off live-action TV special featuring Chris Pratt and his cosmic crew — The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

With the unique shooting on Vol. 3 now in progress, little is known about the special thus far, but we may rest confident that it will debut this year. “It’s out pretty soon,” director James Gunn revealed of the Holiday Special. “You know, it’s not like people have to wait for very long.”

In a separate interview, Gunn praised the project as “completely ridiculous” and “unlike anything that anyone has ever seen before.” The Suicide Squad director went so far as to call it “the greatest work I’ve ever done in my life.” That’s quite the compliment coming from the filmmaker who penned that Justice League moment in The Peacemaker series’ final episode.

We can expect Pratt to reprise his role as Star-Lord in the special, alongside Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), and Vin Diesel (Groot). It’s conceivable that some of the new cast members from Vol. 3 will appear, such as Will Poulter’s Adam Warlock.

It’s extra special that we’ve got another nugget of cosmic craziness from these beloved characters when The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special debuts on Disney Plus this Christmas.
