Demi Lovato continues to explore and understand their identity, making changes to the pronouns they use. Recently, Lovato announced the addition of “she/her” pronouns alongside “they/them” pronouns, explaining their decision in a GQ Hype Spain interview.
In the interview, Lovato shared their experience of constantly having to educate and explain their pronoun choices to others, which became exhausting. This exhaustion played a part in their decision to also embrace feminine pronouns. Lovato acknowledged the importance of continuing to spread awareness and understanding.
Lovato initially announced their nonbinary identity and use of they/them pronouns in 2021. They described feeling a balance between masculine and feminine energies and not identifying strictly as a man or a woman. The choice of pronouns was a reflection of their sense of being a human being. Recently, Lovato has been feeling more connected to their feminine side, which led to the inclusion of she/her pronouns.
The singer also discussed the challenges they face in environments where only binary options exist, such as public restrooms and official forms. Lovato expressed a desire for gender-neutral options to be available, as the current limited choices don’t align with their understanding of themselves. They believe that the available options should expand to better represent diverse identities.
Lovato has acknowledged that there is still work to be done in creating an inclusive and respectful environment for everyone. They emphasized the importance of understanding that mistakes can happen with pronouns, especially when people are learning, and that it’s crucial to approach pronoun use with respect and openness.
Demi Lovato continues to advocate for greater acceptance and understanding of gender identities, encouraging progress towards a more inclusive society.
