Fresh off their big wins on Sunday night’s 71st Annual Tony Awards, the cast of Broadway’s newest smash hit Dear Evan Hansen is making waves on the iTunes Charts.  At the Tonys, the musical took home two of the top honor awards; Best Musical and Best Actor in a Musical which went to the lead star, Ben Platt.

After the play’s successful night, the cast album soundtrack has taken over the number one spot on iTunes, ahead of all other albums including the highly anticipated and promoted new release from Katy Perry, her new album Witness.

It’s not really surprising.  The music from Dear Evan Hansen is pretty spectacular and deserves all the acknowledgment and accolades it’s getting.  And this isn’t the first time that the album has been making waves on the music charts.  Back in February, the cast album made it all the way to number 8 on the Billboard album chart.  That number 8 achievement actually made history since it was the highest debut for a cast album since Camelot back in 1961.  In this regard, Dear Evan Hansen even beat out the likes of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton which debuted at number 12 and eventually peaked at number 3 on the charts.

Dear Evan Hansen tells the story of a boy who has simply always wanted to feel like he belongs.  The show’s website says it best, “A letter that was never meant to be seen, a lie that was never meant to be told, a life he never dreamed he could have.  Evan Hansen is about to get the one thing he’s always wanted; a chance to finally fit in.”

In Ben Platt’s acceptance speech for Best Actor in a Musical, he acknowledged the powerful message which the play delivers by saying, “To all young people watching at home, don’t waste any time trying to be like anybody else because the things that make you strange are the things that make you powerful.”

If you’re not familiar with the show, check out the video below from Sunday night’s Tony Awards.  We dare you not to get chills while listening to this song!

Congratulations on all the success to the cast and crew of Dear Evan Hansen!
