HBO Releases First Full Trailer For ‘Deadwood’ Movie

This past week, HBO Films released a trailer for the upcoming Deadwood movie.  This is the first footage that long-suffering fans have been privy to, since a 55 second long tease was released last month, and the trailer does not disappoint.  Featuring a comfortingly foul-mouthed Ian McShane as Al Swearengen and Timothy Olyphant in the role of Seth Bullock, the trailer seems to set up a town of Deadwood that is both pushing back against and celebrating progress, fighting to keep their independence even as telephone poles are heaved up in the town streets, and South Dakota becomes the 40th state.  Bullock and Swearengen must fight together against Senator Hearst returns to Deadwood from California.

Set twelve years after the original series was prematurely cut down by bigwigs at HBO, the Deadwood the Movie is written by series creator David Milch, who was recently diagnosed with Alzheimers Disease.  It also features the return of many of the original series characters and actors.  It will focus on time, according to producer Carolyn Strauss:

If you ask David, it’s about the passage of time. The toll of time on people. It’s mellowed some people and hardened others. And it’s about the town’s maturing and becoming part of the Union and what that event sets in motion, in a very personal way for the people that it brings in town and what ensues. The toll of time has not just struck Deadwood and the characters but all the people making it as well, you get to see the faces of people 12 years later.

The film was shot on the sets of Westworld–which is actually filmed on the old Deadwood sets.  Much of the town had to be re-created, as such, and the new production design takes historical events such as a fire that destroyed much of the town in 1879.  As such there are some stone buildings now where lumber once was when Sol Starr and Seth Bullock first rolled into town.

Deadwood the Movie premieres on May 31st on HBO.
