Deadpool 2: Hear One of It’s Stars Explain Why the Ending had to be Changed

Deadpool 2 was generally well-received by fans, thanks to the addition of new favorites such as Zazie Beetz’s Domino and Josh Brolin’s Cable, which expanded upon the success of the initial film. However, one popular character’s treatment sparked controversy. In Deadpool 2, Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) was murdered off quickly after Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) reconnected with her.

Fortunately, thanks to the technology brought from the future by time-traveling Cable, the Merc with the Mouth was eventually able to alter history and reverse his beloved’s death, although in a hastily concluded post-credits sequence. If this looked like it was hastily put together in reshoots, it’s because it was.

While reflecting on her role in the Deadpool franchise, Baccarin confirmed to Syfy Wire that Vanessa’s return was a last-minute decision:

“I feel like I got a call from David Leitch one day, and he was just like: ‘You know, your [scenes] with Ryan are testing so well in this movie, and people are getting so upset [online] that she’s dead, so we’re gonna have to leave the door open for her to possibly come back.’”

Despite her reversal of fortune, however, Baccarin isn’t sure if she’ll return for Deadpool 3, which was just revealed to be produced by Marvel Studios. In this same interview, Baccarin said that she’s still waiting to hear whether or not she’ll be invited back as Vanessa. It could go either way because the actress also acknowledged that Reynolds is quiet about her presence in the third film whenever they speak.

Only Ryan Reynolds has been confirmed for Deadpool 3 so far, with Reynolds reteaming with Free Guy and The Adam Project director Shawn Levy. There’s a chance the film will restart the Merc’s mythology in the MCU, but Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are returning to write the script, so it’s possible it’ll pick up some strands from previous movies. Hopefully there will be a Vanessa/Wade romance included in that.
