David Yates to Direct all Five ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Films

David Yates to Direct all Five Fantastic Beasts Films

Director David Yates has told The Hollywood Reporter that he is committed to directing all five of the films in the Fantastic Beasts franchise. Yates previously directed the first four Harry Potter films so he is no stranger to the wizarding world. It is a daunting task indeed, but Yates says that he is looking at them one film at a time. They are currently in preproduction for the second film and are busy building sets of Paris, France and Watford, England. The sequel is expected in theaters November 16, 2018.

In an interview with Variety, J.K. Rowling, who will pen all five scripts, talked about their decision to expand the series from a trilogy. As she did a story treatment, she realized that there was no way to tell the story in only three films and that five felt like the natural arc. Rowling is treating the entire franchise almost like a script where you have your classic three-act story (beginning, middle, and end), but sometimes, there is a need for a five-act story. Each individual film will be an act. What’s even more impressive is that the story will extend over the course of 19 years. The Harry Potter films spanned 7 years and naturally unfolded with each new year at Hogwarts. 19 years is a lot of time to cover and makes sense that there would need to be so much more room for telling that story.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens November 18, 2016.
