DareDevil ‘Penny and Dime’ Recap/Review

“One Batch… Two
Batch… Penny and Dime,”

‘Penny
and Dime’ kicked off with the
Irish mobster gang known as the
‘Kitchen Irish’
surrounding a casket of one of their members who was
killed in the brutal
massacre by
The Punisher. We meet one of the leaders, Finn. Finn is extremely
infuriated
at the fact that The Punisher
has stolen $1.2 million of his money.
He orders his men to find The
Punisher, or else they also will find
themselves
in a casket.

The Irish are eventually able to track down
The Punisher’s
current
safehouse, after learning from a salesman that The Punisher has a dog
and
frequents his store to buy dog
food. The Punisher (Frank Castle) watches
from across the street as the
Irish raid his safehouse, and take
his dog with
them.

Matt, Karen and Foggy attend Grotto’s funeral. In
fact, they are
the only
three that are in the church. Following the service, Matt has a
conversation
with the pastor of the church.
He discusses with him that even
though he did everything he could to help
Grotto, it still wasn’t good
enough.
He’s overwhelmed with guilt. The pastor tells him that he doesn’t
know what
Matt didn’t do or
what he should have done, but the guilt that Matt is feeling
means that
Matt’s work is not yet
finished.

Karen shows Matt and Foggy
the files she has on The
Punisher. She pulls out the x-ray of his
skull, trying
to explain to them that she thinks there is more to his story
and that The
Punisher is just
a small fish in the sea. She thinks the best way to save their
law firm (now
that they are seemingly on the
D.A’s bad side) is to find The
Punisher; and his real story. While Matt and
Foggy discuss the future of
their
firm, Karen sneaks out of the office, taking The Punisher files with

her.

She reaches out to
a former employee of Metro-General who was with
the doctor who took the x-
ray of The Punisher’s skull after
he got shot in the
head. According to the former employee, a bunch of men in
black suits came in
and
pushed the paper work for a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) when The Punisher came

in with the headshot wound. Even
though the doctor pulled the plug, The
Punisher’s heart seemingly restarted
itself all on its own, as if it
were a
miracle. He refused to die. The former employee wound up taking The
Punisher
back to his house
after he awoke, and that was how he got fired. Karen then asks
for the home
address.

Marvel’s DareDevil

Matt

reaches out to Melvin and
get’s his new mask for his costume. It looks
essentially the same, but
Melvin made it so that it was as
close to
indestructible as it could get. All I know is, I want one… cause
it looks
pretty awesome! (Hi-
fives the costume designers)

We see The Punisher
sitting outside a
carousel, watching children get on
and off the ride. The
lights suddenly shut off, and we see members from the
Irish mob coming out to

confront the Punisher. He manages to kill a few of them, but he finds
himself
outnumbered. A few of the
members taze him, and he blacks out.

Matt
confronts Officer Brett, as
the DareDevil, at a crime scene.
He begins to ask
him for information on The Punisher and The Irish. Before
he can get a clear
answer out
of Brett, Brett’s radio goes off about shots being fired at another
area.
Matt disappears, hurrying off to
the next crime scene. He eventually
arrives at the carousel where The
Punisher was last seen and finds one of
the
Irish mobsters still alive. He tortures him, demanding to know where
Finn and
the rest of the Irish
are holding The Punisher.

Finn has The Punisher
hostage, and he
begins to torture him with a power
drill to find out where The
Punisher hid the money ($1.2 Million) that he
stole from him. When The Punisher

does not answer, despite the torture, Finn ups his game. He has his men
bring
out The Punisher’s dog,
telling him that he will torture the dog twice as bad,
if The Punisher
continues to withhold the location of
Finn’s money. The
Punisher caves, telling him it is in a van on 48th and
10th. Finn sends his man
to the
van, and the money winds up being there… but it’s rigged with
explosives.
The van detonates.

Finn
turns his anger towards The Punisher,
but he breaks free of his bindings and
holds a gun up to Finn’s face.
He then
asks Finn ‘who was there that day’ and ‘who killed his family’.
Finn merely
chuckles and
responds with ‘who the hell cares’. Suddenly, DareDevil appears
and begins
to assist The Punisher in taking
out some of Finn’s men. The
Punisher shoots Finn in the face, and the two
of them are able to

escape.

Matt and The Punisher stop in a cemetery, as The Punisher is

unable to continue walking
due to the injuries he acquired from Finn’s torture.
The Punisher then
begins to tell Matt a very touching
story about how when he
came home from his deployment with the Marine Corps,
the first thing he did was

go and visit his daughter at her school. It was one of the happiest moments
of
his life. Later on that
night, his daughter wanted him to read to her. He said
he was too tired, and
he would read to her tomorrow
night. For his
family…there was no ‘tomorrow night’. They were murdered
that next day. Now
that she
and the rest of his family are dead, he’s living with
regrets.

Brett
appears and tells his partner to
apprehend The Punisher,
and he even cuffs Matt. Matt tells Brett to ‘take
the collar’ for The

Punisher’s capture, and that it can’t be him. He says that the days of

vigilante’s running the town
are over, and the police are in charge. Brett
let’s him go, as a sign of
good faith.

While all this
was occurring,
Karen broke into The Punisher’s house under the cover of
night and discovered
the truth
about his life. He was a decorated Marine, and a loving father and
husband.
While she searched his house, a
bunch of men in suits showed up. Karen
snuck out of the house, and headed
back to town.

Karen, Matt
and Foggy
all unite at Josie’s for a drink and to watch the news on The
Punisher’s
capture. They know
that they are going to have a lot of work cut out for them
with the D.A,
especially now that The Punisher has
been apprehended. Karen walks
Matt home, and after a brief, romantic
conversation Matt asks Karen if he can

take her to dinner sometime.

In the concluding minutes of ‘Penny and

Dime’, Matt returns inside
his apartment and pulls out a beer for a nightcap.
Something startles him,
and he pulls out a knife. We then
see a female, sitting
on his couch with an almost wicked smirk. Matt let’s
out a heavy sigh and says:

Hello, Elektra.

BAM!

A Few

Thoughts…

Being a
Soldier myself, who has been away from home
a for periods of time, I found
this episode particularly
touching. I love the
direction in which Marvel is taking The Punisher in
this Netflix Original
series.
He’s clearly a badass, but he also has that sweet sensitive side. I
like
how they are giving his character
some humanity and humility, and not
shaping him up to be completely
emotionless like a robot. Excellent
writing and
character development. By the way, I LOVE the fact that The
Punisher is a dog
person. Just
saying.

What’s with the men in the suits consistently being
involved
in all parts of The Punisher’s
life? The former hospital employee made
mention of ‘men in suits’ giving
the order for a DNR when The
Punisher was
shot in the skull, and then a bunch of them showed up at his
old home when Karen
was doing
an investigation of her own. Seems like our friend is involved in some

pretty heavy duty stuff.

I
loved the amount of action that was packed
into this episode, especially the
moments that involved both The
Punisher and
DareDevil together. One of my favorite scenes was when Brett
apprehended The
Punisher and
The DareDevil, but decided to let the DareDevil go when he told
Brett to
take the credit for the capture of
The Punisher. Brett could have been
‘that guy’ and still taken DareDevil
in anyway. Instead, he showed him
a
gesture of good faith, and let him go.

I kind of like the whole

Matt/Karen romance they have
going on. It’s not overly dramatized like some
television romances are and
they are keeping it very
realistic. I’m definitely
a fan. The two actors have amazing on-screen
chemistry and they really do make

it work. Once again, great writing and great acting.

I’m still
loving
Jon Bernthal as The
Punisher right now, and I look forward to seeing what Elodie
Yung brings to
the screen as
Elektra!

Trivia:

Did
you know that the poem
The Punisher says before he takes
a shot is ‘One Batch,
Two Batch…Penny and Dime’ and that it is a quote
from his daughter’s
favorite
book?
