‘Daredevil’ Actress Comments on Cancellation: “It was purely a Netflix Decision”

A Daredevil actress is commenting on the recent cancellation of what seemed to be an extremely popular Netflix series.

More Daredevil cancellation fallout.

Netflix and Marvel collaboration series Daredevil centers around Matt Murdock, a child who was blinded by chemicals. It gives him superhuman powers that can see things in a powerful way. At night, he walks the streets of Hell’s Kitchen as the fearless daredevil. The series was cancelled in late November, shocking its fans.

Amy Rutberg, who starred in the show as Marci Stahl, spoke with Inverse last week, where she discussed the cancellation.

“My contacts at Marvel were very surprised. Any of the rumors that it was a Marvel decision are wrong, I think it was purely a Netflix decision. That comes from personal conversations with people high up at Marvel. They were surprised … We had heard rumors we would start production as early as February 2019. It’s a little unusual to be that far ahead in the planning and cancel the show, which makes me think Netflix was laboring over whether or not to cancel it. My guess was it was not an easy decision.”

Daredevil wasn’t the only Marvel series to get the boot in the recent months. Iron Fist and Luke Cage were also axed. It’s speculated that Netflix has reason for the cancellations. As Disney prepares to launch its own streaming service, Disney +, the two companies have begun to part ways. It could also be that the shows are more expensive than others, and Netflix is shaving that off considering its new growth plan.

Fans were also shocked to find that Daredevil was the fourth most watched series on Netflix, which proves that the above speculations are most likely the answer.

Daredevil fans will see him again soon, though.  Marvel released this statement shortly after the cancellation was announced.

Marvel is extremely grateful to the huge audience that loved Marvel’s Daredevil. From the moment of young Matt’s first act of heroism to the birth of Page, Murdock, & Nelson, it has been an unbelievable journey. We are incredibly proud of the amazing showrunners and writers starting with Drew Goddard and Steven DeKnight, Marco Ramirez and Doug Petrie and Erik Oleson, Charlie Cox, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Vincent D’Onofrio and our casts who brought our characters to life with such excellence, and every one of the fantastic crews in NYC. We look forward to more adventures with the Man without Fear in the future.”
