‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ To Feature A Major Death

With the crossover confirmed as the Crisis on Infinite Earths, speculation has been further fueled by the news of the renewal of all the CW superhero shows, which you can read more about here, and the foreboding words from CW’s president Mark Pedowitz who said that a major death in the crossover extravaganza is “highly likely”.

Now, in the comic of the same name, both Flash and Supergirl perish- ringing any bells? this is essentially what almost happened in Elseworlds. In fact, Barry Allen almost died in a very similar way compared to his death in Crisis where he simply ran until he vanished. For Supergirl, her death in the year long event featured her sacrificing herself to protect her cousin, Kal-El. In the crossover, the two heroes almost die when trying to slow down the earth but are miraculously saved.

But what saved them from certain death?

Well this could be the death that Mark Pedowitz was on about. Unless the heroes somehow reverse fate, we could potentially see the death of the Green Arrow.

*holds back tears*

The reason why Barry and Kara survived the massive stunt that saved the world was because Oliver Queen made a deal with the Monitor after he saw their deaths in the Book of Destiny. No matter what happened, it looked as though Supergirl and The Flash were destined to die, unless Oliver swapped places with them. Just to be clear, Elseworld never showed what the bargain was but as the old saying goes… “an eye for an eye”.

While he was saved from imminent death, The Flash could still die in the next crossover. Following a tease that dates back to the pilot, we are still yet to learn the truth surrounding Barry’s disappearance in 2024 which supposedly features a battle with the Reverse-Flash and a shadow army, as well as all the heroes that we know from the CW shows fighting alongside the Scarlet Speedster.

The issue with this is that the crossovers typically take place in the present day. Which means Crisis on Infinite Earths will take place at the end of 2019 instead of 2024. Also, it hasn’t been officially confirmed that these two crisis’s are in fact the same crisis. The crisis on infinite earths could be completely separate to Barry’s disappearance. While I believe it is unlikely, it is possible that these two crisis’s could be two different events. However, the Green Arrow is said to be fighting alongside the Flash during this event, so if Oliver dies who becomes the new Green Arrow?

The Flash showrunners elaborated on the infamous newspaper from 2024 saying that:

“Greg [Berlanti] really has a sort of master plan of things, and I’m really excited about how it’s going to pay off.”

With The Flash back on our screens, it looks as though we will learn a lot more about the event from Nora. However I suspect that the next crossover, which is apparently the biggest and most ambitious one yet, will reveal the fate of The Flash and answer the many questions fans have had since the pilot.

As much as I love Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen, I do believe they are setting up his death (which can always be reversed), and I believe a major character’s death will separate this crossover from the others. Superhero shows, and even films, tend to play it safe and dispose of characters that exhaust their usefulness. But what if they shocked us with a major death? it really could change a lot in terms of the amount of risks the CW take.
