For a moment, let’s travel back in time to the days of your childhood. To the days when every kid had a coloring book and nothing was more exciting then getting a brand new box of Crayola crayons. A whole box full of bright, perfectly tipped crayons, ready to perk up your coloring book pages and bring the beauty you saw in those pages to life. There seriously wasn’t anything better than getting a new box of crayons.
If it’s been a while since you’ve revisited your favorite childhood past time of coloring, you might want to think about picking up a box of crayons soon! Crayola has just revealed they have developed a brand new crayon color!
A new shade of blue was revealed at Oregon State University where, in 2009, Chemist Has Subramanian discovered a pigment called YInMn Blue. Subramanian’s discover is what inspired the new color crayon.

Now, we know what you’re saying, “Do we REALLY need another blue crayon?” The color choice for the new addition wasn’t chosen haphazardly. As it turns out, Senior Vice President of U.S. and Global Marketing at Crayola, Melanie Boulden, stated that through the use of polls and surveys, Crayola learned America’s favorite color is blue. As a result of their market research, the company felt their new blue addition would be the best choice.
The addition of this newly created color of crayon comes with some extra special fun as well. Because the blue does not yet have a name, Crayola his hosting a contest through their website where YOU can come up with the perfect name for this pigment. I you think you have the best (appropriate) name for the color, be sure to enter because you could win a $100 Crayola prize!
Get those thinking caps on and be creative! Contest ends on June 2nd! What do you think of the new crayon color? Do we need more blue in the coloring world? Sound off in the comment section below!
