Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk Trailer explores ‘The event that shaped our World’

Hope is a weapon, survival is victory.

Between the 26 May and 4 June 1940, Operation Dynamo was an evacuation effort to rescue Allied Soldiers from the beaches of Dunkirk. The Battle of Dunkirk left the war-ravaged city surrounded by enemy soldiers via sea and air; leaving the 400,000 French and British troops seemingly helpless.

This is why Operation Dynamo was also known as the Miracle of Dunkirk, the soldiers who survived the battle managed to make it out alive against all odds; it was truly a miracle. The evacuation was made possible by the Halt Order on May 24th which lasted for 3 days and allowed troops to throw together a plan for defense and escape. This still left Allied Soldiers in a vulnerable position, and many lives were lost, but it did make the evacuation of around 330,000 soldiers possible.

The soldiers who managed to survive didn’t think of the Miracle of Dunkirk as a reign of glory; it was much more somber than that. In fact, the darkness and devastation of those days were carried with them for the rest of their lives. Winston Churchill reminded people, during a speech to the House of Commons on June 4th that victory doesn’t come in the form of evacuation.

We must be very careful not to assign to this deliverance the attributes of a victory. Wars are not won by evacuations.

In 2017, the harrowing story of Operation Dynamo will be told on the big screen thanks to Christoper Nolan, a genius in the world of film. Dunkirk will premiere on July 21st and it was easily one of the most talked about films in 2016; even with what little information was released until now.

One of the most talked about aspects of the film has been the cast. With names like Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, and Mark Rylance – there are absolute legends on Dunkirk‘s roster. Also on the cast-list is Harry Styles of One Direction, who some fans immediately rejected the presence of. Harry, who has the world at his feet, didn’t walk into Dunkirk casting demanding a role because of his name. Instead, he worked hard to show that he wanted this film, to work with Nolan, and to be part of this cast – and he succeeded.

The teaser trailer for Dunkirk was released on August 4th and now, the full-length trailer for the film has made it’s debut and it is a testament to who Christopher Nolan is and how incredible any film he works on becomes.

The trailer embodies the fear and tireless effort just to survive that the soldiers of Dunkirk displayed, but also the hope that made the evacuation possible, the fight that brought some of those soldiers home.

You can see Dunkirk in July of 2017, and until then, keep up with the information about the film on their official Twitter page.
