Christian Navarro Defends 13 Reasons Why

The controversy surrounding 13 Reasons Why is still going strong, when you’ve got a show that addresses the hard topics, there’s bound to be a bit of it. However, a slew of actors and fans have spoken out in defense of the series and how, while these things are hard to watch, it’s happening all over the world to young adults right now.

The latest actor to speak on behalf of the series is Christian Navarro who plays Tony Padilla, and what he had to say made a lot of sense. He spoke on the attitude that the cast and crew had through filming, told fans that there were mental health experts on set at all times, and that they did everything they could to be helpful and not harmful.

I think they’re not watching the same show. When we were working on it, we had tons of mental health experts on set at all times, our producers were very diligent on making sure that the tone was inclusive and helpful and not harmful.

He commented on the difference of opinions, never said anyone was wrong or right, and also offered a challenge to those who think the series is glorifying issues like suicide and abuse.

‘I think there’s always going to be controversy. I respect their opinion, especially when it comes from a place of trying to protect their kids. I think they should listen to their children though, this is happening right now all over the world in high schools. I think the parents should watch it with them.

13 Reasons Why was renewed for a second season recently and it will focus on the same characters, their lives, and how Hannah’s death affected each of them on a personal level and as a group of peers.

Tony specifically was dealing with a lot of guilt at the end of 13 Reasons Why’s first season, some felt that that was why he was trying to take such good care of Clay, asking if he’d listened to the tapes yet, trying to find out where he was in the process. He knew Clay would need a friend.

It’ll be especially interesting to see the dynamic between the two of them when the series returns.
