Chris Pratt Says It’s ‘Not an Easy Time’ for the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Cast Since James Gunn’s Firing

Last month, the future of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise was rocked after the dismissal of director James Gunn. In July, Disney announced it severed ties with Gunn after a series of offensive tweets were uncovered from his past social media history.

Since then, friends and colleagues of the disgraced director have come to his defense. After gathering their thoughts on the subject, the entire Guardians of the Galaxy cast including Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Sean Gunn, Pom Klementieff, Michael Rooker, and Karen Gillan all came together to issue a heartfelt statement on Gunn’s firing while requesting that the director be reinstated for the third installment of the film series. It was truly a powerful statement made by the entire team of actors who worked so closely with Gunn.

Individually, Bautista has been the most vocal about his disapproval of James Gunn’s departure, however, in a recent interview with the Associated Press, franchise star Chris Pratt took a moment to further speak his thoughts.

Pratt expressed just how complicated the situation has been for all involved. On one hand, the entire Guardians cast loves and respects Gunn. On the other hand, they also love their characters and being a part of the Guardians films. Pratt said:

[row]“It’s not an easy time. We all love James and he’s a good friend of ours, but we also really love playing the Guardians of the Galaxy. It’s a complicated situation for everybody. And you know, we just want to move forward and do what’s right and be the best people we can be.”[/row]

The news of Gunn’s firing came during San Diego Comic-Con weekend. While Marvel Studios was not present at the convention this year, Pratt was in attendance promoting the upcoming Lego Movie 2: The Second Part. She spoke about how he was in complete shock during the con weekend and how he feels the Guardians statement clearly represents how the cast feels about the situation. Pratt continued:

[row]“I love going to Comic-Con but I ended up not doing a lot of interviews around that time just because it was so shocking. All I know is we put a lot of time, thought and effort into the statement that we released about it. And I think we all kind of want that statement to be essentially what we have to say about it. And we were pretty clear and honest about how we feel.”[/row]

Since Gunn’s firing, Disney and Marvel have been silent on the issue. Various reports have been circulating online with some stating the studio is looking to rehire Gunn for Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 3 while others are stating there are no such discussions taking place.

Fans, however, have responded loud and clear. A fan-made petition has been circulating online calling for Gunn’s reinstatement. The petition currently has over 380,000 signatures in support of the director.
