Chris Hemsworth, known for his roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Netflix’s Extraction, is gearing up for his most intense project yet. He is set to star alongside Anya Taylor-Joy in Furiosa, the prequel to George Miller’s adrenaline-fueled hit, Mad Max: Fury Road.

The production of Fury Road in 2015 was famously challenging, with extensive use of practical effects and thrilling car chases across the desert. Hemsworth is now joining the Mad Max universe as the antagonist opposite Taylor-Joy’s Furiosa, the character originally portrayed by Charlize Theron. Although he was excited about the opportunity, Hemsworth faced some difficulties in preparing for a villainous role.

In an interview with EW ahead of Extraction 2‘s release on Netflix, Hemsworth shared his experience working on Furiosa. As someone accustomed to playing the hero, it took him time to find his footing as the film’s antagonist.

“At first, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do,” Hemsworth confessed. “As the shooting date approached, it started to become nerve-wracking. But then, suddenly, everything clicked, and it turned out to be one of the best experiences I’ve had.”

Hemsworth also praised George Miller‘s direction on Furiosa, describing the film as “enormous and otherworldly, capturing the essence of the Mad Max world.” He further expressed his admiration for Miller’s ability to deliver unexpected elements that left him amazed.

In addition to Hemsworth and Taylor-Joy, the Furiosa cast includes Tom Burke, who stepped in to replace Yaya Abdul-Mateen II due to scheduling conflicts. Theron, the original Furiosa, has shown support for Taylor-Joy, expressing confidence in her ability to embody the beloved character.

After a lengthy development process, the Furiosa prequel is finally approaching its release. Fans can mark their calendars for May 24, 2024, when the film is set to hit theaters, nearly a decade after the release of Fury Road.
