Black Symbiote Spider-Man is Back!

In 1984, exactly 35 years ago, Peter Parker returned from the Secret Wars donning a new black and white suit. What he didn’t know was that the goo-like substance that engulfed his suit would turn out to be one of his deadliest enemies, Venom, who debuted just 4 years later in 1988.

Despite separating from the symbiote, Spidey has always returned to it. Most recently, Peter returned to the black suit in Amazing Spider-Man #800 when Norman Osborn merged with Carnage to become the Red Goblin.

Marvel are now reuniting the inseparable pair in an all new flashback mini series.

This story puts Spider-Man up against Mysterio in the time period before Peter and the symbiote broke up. Marvel’s editor, Devin Lewis, recognizes that Mysterio and Spidey never battled during the reign of the black suit, but claims that:

“Peter, Greg and I have all done our homework — we’ve read and reread the original Alien Costume Saga in its entirety, revisited old stories and talked around those classics literally, for hours. This is Peter Parker as Spider-Man, wearing one of the most iconic costumes in all of comics, and we’re treating this story will the heart, seriousness and respect that that entails as a result.”

Peter David (Ben Reilly: The Scarlet Spider) and artist Greg Land (Domino, Hunt for Wolverine) are working together for Symbiote Spider-Man, a five-issue miniseries that is going to cover untold stories that feature Spidey and arguably one of his most iconic suits.

Lewis also revealed that Spider-Man will be joined by many other characters that fans love, without giving too much away, he revealed that both Black Cat and Aunt May would appear in the series. Since the series is revisiting a familiar time period but introducing new events, the possibilities are quite endless.
