Baz Luhrmann’s ‘The Get Down’ Just May Be Your New Netflix Obsession

Visually captivating.  Amazing storylines.  Catchy musical scenes.  This is what we’ve come to expect from Moulin Rouge and The Great Gatsby director Baz Luhrmann.  Next month, Luhrmann will be bringing his cinematic greatness to Netflix with his new series, The Get Down.

The new series takes place in New York City in 1977.  NYC was on the verge of bankruptcy and times were tough.  Often, times of despair give way to a rich rebirth of art and this story shows just that.  The Get Down is music-driven and set during a time of disco’s decline and hip-hop’s rise with a mythical story told through the lives of kids in the South Bronx who would go on to change the world forever.

Baz Luhrmann is joined by an amazing team including four-time Oscar winner Catherine Martin (executive producer), legendary MC Nas (executive producer), Grandmaster Flash (associate producer) Stephen Adly Guirgis (Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, co-creator and executive producer) as well as several other collaborators.

The impressive cast includes some relative newcomers like Justice Smith (Paper Towns), Herizen Guardiola (Runaway Island), Shameik Moore (Dope) as well as some seasoned acting veterans such as Jimmy Smits (Sons of Anarchy), Jaden Smith (The Pursuit of Happyness), and Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad).

Check out the trailer for the new series below.  The Get Down will be available to view on Netflix on August 12th.  Are you ready to get down!?
