Re-living Batman (1989) On its 29th Birthday

Well, hello incredible Batman fans! Today we celebrate the 29th birthday of a movie that kind of started my Batman craze from a rather young age. It’s also another movie I have to thank my mother for, as she was the one that got me into the Tim Burton movies in the first place. I was a young kid when I saw this movie, I can’t honestly remember when it was, but I was just SO into the man that dressed like a bat.

Tim Burton directed Batman (1989), it was one of the first Batman movies that came out of Warner Bros. It stars Michael Keaton as Batman, Jack Nicholson as the Joker, and Kim Basinger as Vicki Vale. It was also the first origin movie we got from the Joker. Boy, did I love this movie, it was one of my favorites for a long time. Until I, of course, saw Batman Returns (with my queen Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman).

One of the things I loved the most is how Tim Burton still made it his own, and of course, the moments Michael Keaton drops down in scenes, showing off his bat-like figure.

Fun Facts:

Robin Williams was offered the role as the Joker when Jack Nicholson wasn’t so sure he wanted to portray the part of the Joker. Robin Williams didn’t like he was used as a way to bait Jack Nicholson in the role and denied Warner Bros. the role of portraying The Riddler in Batman Forever, AND he decided not to be in any Warner Bros. productions until they apologized. How do you think the Joker would have looked like with Robin Williams?

Michael Keaton improvised his famous line “I’m Batman.” In the script, it said: “I am the night.”

Bob Kane, the legendary man that created Batman, was supposed to have a cameo in this movie. Right before filming, he became ill, and they never rescheduled filming. He did, however, do a cameo in Batman Forever!

Mel Gibson was the number one choice as Batman, but he couldn’t do it as he was already filming for Lethal Weapon 2! To me, Michael Keaton was a perfect fit for this movie, even though he’s a bit on the smaller side for a Batman. I think his claustrophobia made Keaton the best version of Batman he could be.

Did you like Batman (1989)? Did you enjoy it just as much as I did when I was young? Let us know in the comments below.
