AJ McLean is marking a significant moment in his recovery. The Backstreet Boys member posted two body transformation photographs taken a year apart on Instagram, revealing his sobriety progress. With two peace signs beside more muscular images of him pumping iron at the gym, “dad bod” McLean poses in the photos.
On September 1, McLean posted a side-by-side photo of himself from one year ago and present day with the caption: “and wow it’s amazing what a little dedication and setting goals can do for a person. The journey is far from over, though. This is just the beginning!” In addition to promoting healthy living among his followers, he also wrote: “Let’s go! If I can do it so can you!!”

McLean stated on his podcast on December 6th that he was close to celebrating his one year of sobriety. In December 2022, it will be McLean’s third year of sobriety. He went on to say “As long as I’m keeping my side of the street clean, I can’t worry about keeping your side of the street clean,” to co-host and former Dancing With the Stars partner Cheryl Burke. “And everything actually worked itself out. I feel much better.”
Just a few hours before shooting the Backstreet Boys’ music video for “The Call” off their album Black and Blue, he did drugs for the first time. A few months later, his bandmates talked to him about how much his behavior had changed recently. Kevin Richardson even said, “”I will never trust you again. You’re dead to me” unless he got help from a professional soon.” The star didn’t get sober until nearly twenty years later.
In November 2020, the singer spoke to Tamron Hall about how his 3-year-old daughter Lyric indirectly got him to give up alcohol and drugs. He recalls her saying “‘You don’t smell like my Daddy,'” McLean stated. “There doesn’t get a lower bottom in my world that your own child telling you that you don’t smell like their dad.”
The recording artist McLean spoke to Good Morning America in October 2020 about his “turning point.” He described how, after coming home from a trip to Las Vegas and seeing the way his family reacted to the smell of alcohol on him, he decided that he needed to become sober. He shares 5-year-old daughter Lyric and 9-year-old Elliot with wife Rochelle DeAnna. McLean said that his wife could smell alcohol on his breath. “And my youngest of my two daughters would not sit with me.” He continued,”Today, there’s too much to live for. My beautiful children, my wonderful wife, my great career, and my amazing brothers
I’ve never felt more grounded than I do today.”
