As ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Bids Farewell to Ellen Pompeo in an Emotional Tribute Video for Her Final Appearance

As Meredith Grey exits the long-running show Grey’s Anatomy on February 23rd, fans should have tissues in hand to bid her farewell. To honor Ellen Pompeo’s 19 seasons of dedication to the medical drama and her beloved character, ABC has released a tribute video set against Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars” that encapsulates some of Meredith’s most memorable moments. With this nostalgic montage playing in the background, we hear Meredith reflect fondly on those she encountered during her journey: “I have a lot of memories of people… This is the place where I fell in love. The place where I found my family.”

The tribute includes footage of beloved actors such as George (T.R. Knight), Izzie (Katherine Heigl), Cristina (Sandra Oh), Addison (Kate Walsh) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey). As Meredith reflects, “[This] is where I learned to be a doctor; through saving lives and having mine saved – on top of broken bones and the death of loved ones…” Such moments mark the closure one chapter in life yet also open up new opportunities for growth ahead.

Her character is leaving the Seattle hospital for a new life in Boston where she will work on finding a cure for Alzheimer’s. She ends the video saying, “This is the place I will forever call home.”

At the 2022 People’s Choice Awards, the actress announced her return for the season 19 finale this spring. However, it may not be a permanent goodbye; former cast members have made occasional guest appearances in past seasons.

Last Fall, Pompeo took to Instagram to explain that she would be taking a break from the show. “I am eternally grateful and humbled by the love and support you have all shown me, Meredith GREY, and the show for 19 seasons,” she wrote. “Through it all….none of it …would have been possible without the best fans in the world. You all are RIDERS, and you all have made the ride so fun and ICONIC!! I love you madly and appreciate you right back. This isn’t your first time on the rollercoaster… you know the show must go on, and I’ll definitely be back to visit. With a lot of love and immense gratitude XoE.”
